I joined Webber & Company Direct Response Advertising Agency in 1994 as a Designer and Artworker. Within 3 years I was promoted to the agency's top role as Creative Director. We specialised in sale and direct response advertising, charity fundraising and legacy campaigns. That is where I learnt that good design was not just about good looks - it needed to be fit for purpose and generate a financial profit for each client.
I left in 1998 to start my own businesses, Aarlsen Design, with the aim of providing high quality graphic design at an affordable fee mainly to local businesses. I continue to trade as Aarlsen Design, and also as Scarfe Creative, and now have almost 30 years experience to call upon.
WAY OF WORKING
The importance of making my designs 'fit for purpose' underpins everything I create. Of course it needs to look good, but it must firstly do want you want it to do - usually that is sell a product, service or event.
So, my job is ultimately to sell your product or service - I just happen to be good at doing that with creative graphic design.
Whether it is web, print, ads or branding my aim is to understand your business and who your customers are - then create a design that fits the need. It is a simple and effective principle aimed to ensure the money you invest in me turns into a profit for you.

WAY OF WORKING
I will discuss your needs with you by phone, get a clear idea of what is needed, and email a formal quotation to you (usually showing a fixed fee - it makes things easier for us both and I find clients much prefer this, but if you prefer an hourly rate I can do this).
We will agree a target date for the creative work. You'll see emailed proofs (PDFs) during the design and artwork stage and will have plenty of opportunity to comment before approving final artwork. You will not need to approve anything until you're happy with it.
I will provide a pro-forma invoice for any deposit required, and then invoice you as the project is completed - usually once a month.
I'm fortunate to be in an industry that can be reasonably 'green'. For many years I have made the most of that.
I work from home (so have zero commuting miles) and I do not agree to home visits as everything can be accomplished by phone or email. However if a face to face meeting would be beneficial, I will travel to you.
My in house printing is next to nothing, since all quotes, invoices and proofs are provided by emailed PDF. When placing external print orders I choose carefully - my trade accounts are placed with responsible printers who use accredited paper and inks
